A Brighter Future | Pantone's Colour of the Year 2022

Say hello to Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2022: Very Peri. Said to be a colour that "encourages personal inventiveness and creativity", Very Peri is a beautiful, periwinkle blue with a violet red undertone that would be perfect for creating calm, creative and dreamy environments.⁣

Fitting in with our Futurity Trend, Periwinkle is a gorgeous shade, though it isn't for the faint-hearted. If you're wanting to incorporate this colour into your space, we have some ideas and suggestions that will help inspire you to turn your interior into a calming, ethereal dream.

FUTURITY

Evolving from last year’s Illuminating and Ultimate Gray, Pantone have chosen Periwinkle as the colour for 2022 — continuing along the theme of positivity and looking toward the future.

With an increased interest in the metaverse and gaming platforms, Very Peri was chosen to represent the future and our growing fascination with technology in the Digital Age, as well as celebrating its rising artistic and creative community in the digital space.

“Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how colour trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world.” - Pantone.

Versatile in tone, Very Peri is described as encompassing the qualities of blue, yet possesses a violet red undertone that brings a joyous and spritely attitude. While blue induces a calming effect, violet and lilac tones are prominently used to represent wellness and are associated with relaxation and meditation — they can also be seen a lot in some of the digital worldly landscapes that have been created as of late, bringing futuristic moods and possibilities.

Although this colour can be a little daunting to style, we recommend other shades that might emulate a similar look. Deep indigos such as Bendigo Indigo or Lore Indigo, as well as a more greyed lilac such as Plush Lilac — or lilac itself — are great alternative options.

Incorporating smaller accessories, whether it’s vases, candles and artwork, are also other perfect ways of featuring this beautiful trend colour into your space without the full commitment.

CREATIVITY

With a carefree confidence and daring curiosity, Very Peri is said to animate our creative spirit and embrace the light and possibilities of the future. Encouraging courageous creativity and imaginative expression, this gorgeous hybrid colour features tones of red and blue which adds to its complexity and makes this shade versatile in terms of colour pairings — its undertones can also appear more prominent depending on what shade it is paired with.

Periwinkle is inherently multi-faceted. For interiors, it will be more about creating a myriad of tones that are similar in a space rather than using the exact hue. To incorporate this, we recommend deeper, rich tones of blue and aubergine such as Cleo Cobalt and Augustus Eggplant. Deep indigos like Plush Indigo are also great and will sit perfectly against a light lilac accent wall.

Pairing periwinkle with other deep jewel tones is bound to create moodier, impactful looks that will spark imagination and inspire creativity. If you’re inspired by the fantastical interior world developing in the metaverse, tones of blue — such as indigo and sky blues — along with deep aubergines, lilacs and even a soft mint, will create unique spaces that emulate periwinkle and give you a playful palette for creating your own dreamy, interior fantasy.

POSITIVITY

Purple is a power colour — one that ignites creativity and inspires peace. Positive and encouraging, the purple aspect of Very Peri brings a sense of calm and wellness.

For softer a look, incorporating more neutral shades of lilac which are lighter, or slightly greyer, is one way of featuring this trend in your space without it being too bold and overpowering. Our Beachcomber Amethyst, Mystere Purple, and Theodora Lilac fabrics are great choices for implementing a touch of purple and lilac into neutral settings, and make beautiful cushions for a subtle pop of colour.

Soft textures such as velvets and sheers also help create other worldly aspects that periwinkle encourages and celebrates. Sheers like Marley Thistle and Lavender, and Nelma Whitewill create ethereal and serene environments and moods.

Very Peri is the perfect shade for creating relaxing, tranquil spaces. It’s a colour of hope, peace, serenity, and possibility — a shade with a magical element to it that will look stunning in a myriad of interiors.
