Drapery Coatings
Learn the differences between acrylic and silicone backings
When looking for block-out drapery, it’s important to consider the type of coating: whether it’s acrylic or silicone.
In this blog, we will go through the differences and pros between each, as well as what we at Warwick use, prefer and recommend.
WHAT DOES ‘3-PASS’ COATED MEAN?
When a fabric has a ‘3-Pass’ backing or lining, it refers to a process of applying three layers of coating to the back of the drapery fabric. A mixture of both light and dark coloured coats is applied, which together provides light blocking and insulating qualities.
Not only is 3-Pass coated block-out drapery ideal for blocking out sunlight during bright summer mornings and retaining warmth during those cold winter days, it's also perfect for those wanting optimum privacy.
SILICONE VS ACRYLIC
One of the biggest differences between acrylic and silicone is that silicone coating features a rubber backing, whereas acrylic coating has a soft flock backing.
So, which is better? Here is a list of pros for each:
SILICONE
• Good thermal and noise insulation
• 100% block-out
• Drapes in a soft and subtle drop
• Washable.
ACRYLIC
• Superior thermal and noise insulation
• 100% block-out
• Soft and pliable
• Does not self-adhere in humid environments
• Work rooms prefer it as it is easier to sew.
Silicone can be known to stick to itself in hot, humid environments, can be difficult to work with due to slipping during sewing, and is prone to delamination, and for this reason, Warwick choose to only stock premium acrylic backed products as it is more durable and commercial grade.
